PICTURE GALLERY 2009/10 31.08.2010 "Sea Kayaking in South Greenland"
Unfortunately, Club Members were rather thin on the ground for various reasons. However, those that were able to attend along with partners and guests were treated to a fascinationating talk and slide show given by Comrie resident, John King. With a background in Health & Safety and involvement with First Response in Comrie, John obviously felt well equipped for his expedition where the waters were so cold that a capsize would result in death. Despite one dodgy moment of bad weather when the equipment proved itself up to the job in hand there were no real dangers and John and his fellow companions were able to experience the wonders of an extremely scenic landscape along with the culture of its inhabitants. A hearty vote of thanks was proposed by Rotarian, David Smart. 10.08.2010 "Muck ......... Brass ...........Charity"
27.07.2010 "Tulips from Amsterdam" Although a Club member was giving a presentation it turned out that it happened to be George Penny instead of Jim Penny that did so. While George was at pains to stress he was no avid gardener he drew the Club's attention to the amazing show (particularly tulips) put on at the KEUKENHOF Tulips Gardens in Lisse. Through a presentation of photographs it was clear to see why this is the most photographed place on Earth - despite it only being open to the public 2 months of the year! 06.07.2010 "The times they are a changing"
It was out with the old and in with the new at the Club's Handover Meeting. Out went current President, Willie Bell. Willie welcomed Incoming President Peter Dahl into the Chair. In turn, after thanking Willie for his efforts during the past year, Peter introduced George Penny as Vice-President for 2010/11. 06.07.2010 Haiti Earthquake - Shelter Boxes
Before leaving Office President Willie was delighted to present Molly Wilcock with a Certificate of Appreciation from Crieff Rotary Club for all her efforts in co-ordinating fund raising by local schools which led to a number of Shelter Boxes being shipped out to assist with the provision of aid to the population of Haiti following the earthquake damage suffered. A fantastic effort!
Club Golf Champions ![]() At the Club's annual golf championships on 30/06/10 it turned out to be a very successful evening for recent member, David McLeod. David managed to win the best single round with handicap allowance, the best two rounds with handicap allowance and after drawing with David Smart, on countback of the better back nine holes, the best single gross round. David wasn't far away from the clean sweep finishing a close second behind David Smart in the putting competition. All participants enjoyed an excellent meal in the clubhouse following excellent weather on the course.
Drovers' Trek Presentation
As everyone will have noticed from the local papers 7 Crieff High School pupils (along with supervisors) completed a historic trek across the country - arriving back in Crieff on 24.06.2010 - as part of the year long celebrations in respect of the new High School. Crieff Rotary Club were delighted to provide sponsorship (£250) to assist their effort and President Willie had great pleasure in handing over a cheque at this week's meeting to Headteacher, Christine Ross. 29.06.10 Tina Panton - Acquinoe Learning Centre
Tina Panton, a recent Crieff resident of four years came along to give a presentation on the Charity she has set up along with her sister and a friend - The Acquinoe Learning Centre. As they are the only 3 Trustees they are able to ensure funds generated reach their target and to date they have been able to greatly improve the lives and education of many children in Kenya. For more detailed information of the work of the Charity visit - http://www.aquinoe.org/ Rotarian David Smart proposed the Vote of Thanks. 08.06.10 Assistant Governor visits and meets most recent member
01.06.10 New Member's Job Talk & RYLA Candidate introduction
There were two good reasons for attending Rotary tonight. Firstly, David McLeod moved to the top table as he gave his 'job talk'. He stated afterwards that he was happy to move away from the top table! However, his presentation was very informative and accomplished. David spent his working life in the Insurance industry. Initially, he worked with Royal Insurance and saw their amalgamation with Sun Alliance before taking early retirement at 51. Thereafter he became involved with handling the claims which arose as part of the Government's selling of British Coal. This he descibed as his most rewarding spell of employment. Latterly, he spent 6 years in the Bahamas before returning to Scotland. Secondly, we had the pleasure of being introduced to our RYLA candidate for this year, Catriona Smith. Rotarian David Anderson informed the Club that Catriona was a fifth year pupil at Crieff High School currently in the midst of Higher exams. She is involved with Duke of Edinburgh and also the Air Cadets and is looking forward to her week away at RYLA camp in the summer holidays. 25.05.2010 "First you swim; then you cycle; and lastly a run"
11.05.10 "Practical Education"
04.05.10 "Chocks away........................." I’m sure we all know the old adage: “When you’re waiting for a bus none come along and when you’re not two come along together”. Well tonight’s meeting was a little like that. After such a fantastic speaker last week this week brought another! Allan Perera-Liyanage, originally from Sri Lanka, and now resident in the UK for over 34 years came along to share his hobby of flying and to explain what is involved in learning to fly a plane. Since the age of 3 Allan had always had a fascination of planes and how they actually manage to fly. Unfortunately, as the years passed by there was always something which prevented him being able to something about it. However, on reaching 50 years of age he decided it was now or never and made some enquiries at Scone airport. Lessons followed and he became hooked to such an extent that he continued with regular lessons and went on to gain a pilot’s licence. Subject to flying a requisite number of hours in the year he has continued to renew his licence and to pursue his hobby. After providing a talk, liberally sprinkled with humour, explaining exactly how planes were able to fly and just what was involved in learning to fly Allan went on to show a slideshow presentation of various pictures from around Scotland taken from some of his flights and then a brief video on DVD (edited by himself) of a flight around the local countryside. Numerous questions were answered throughout. Allan is a man of many talents. His first occupation was as a professional musician which he still continues with on a semi-professional basis. Thereafter he spent 18 years in the Hotel and Hospitality industry. Currently his occupation is an Artist specialising in Watercolour, Gouache, Acrylic & oil and Picture Framing – www.perera-liyanage.co.uk A hearty vote of thanks was proposed by Rotarian, David Anderson. 27.04.10 "There's gold......................"
We have had a number of excellent speakers throughout the year. However, Dr Fraser Hunter of the National Museum of Scotland must rate as the best to date with his presentation on the recent find of golden artifacts in the Stirling area. His love of his job and the passion he holds for archaeology was clear for all to see The find has posed many questions which will keep Fraser and his team busy for some time to come. 13.04.10 Impressions of Australia
30.03.2010 Ecumenical Accompaniment
Fraser Ritchie spoke in great detail on the very interesting topic of The Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine & Israel. Following on from his recent visit to Palestine & Israel, and with the assistance of a PowerPoint presentation of photographs and illustrations, he was able to report on his personal experiences as an Ecumenical Accompanier and the challenges that lie in attempting to resolve the conflict there. Peter Dahl proposed the Vote of Thanks. 27.03.2010 Inaugural District Young Musician Competition
The inaugural District 1010 Young Musician of the Year Competition took place at Strathallan School today with 8 competitors putting on a feast of musical entertainment for the audience and adjudicators. The Clubs represented were Perth St. Johns; Inverurie; Alford & District; Bridge of Allan & Dunblane; Crieff; Oldmeldrum; Auchterarder & District; and Banchory-Ternan. Instruments played were the Trombone, Scots Fiddle, Alto Saxophone, Piano, Cello, Accordion, Tenor Saxophone & Violin. Crieff Club was represented by Amy Smart playing her Cello. Prizes were awarded to the best Boy and Girl who were declared to be Andrew McLean (Piano) from Bridge of Allan & Dunblane and Zoe Yuile (Violin) of Banchory-Ternan respectively. The Cups, which had very kindly been donated by Past District Governor Bill Leslie and his wife, Mary, were presented to the winners by District Governor, Bill Macfarlane Smith. All participants received a Certificate for doing so. The pictures above show Amy Smart receiving her Certificate and all the competitors with District Governor, Bill Macfarlane Smith.
23.03.2010 Introductory Talk
Recent member to the Club, Alan Frost spoke to Club Members and guests last night with regard to Health & Well-being, which is a passion of his. After a brief introduction as to his working background, Alan gave those assembled food for thought with his presentation on how our lives have evolved over the years and how this has impacted upon health interlinked with how advances in technology perhaps threaten our well-being more than is generally recognised.
09.03.2010 Crieff History
Not for the first time, Crieff Club took pleasure in welcoming local resident, Colin Mayall along to give a presentation. Once again Colin presented all those attending fwith fascinating and detailed insight to the little known and rapidly vanishing history of Crieff and its surrounding area. His talk centred on the findings which arose from the recent development of the Community Campus and his involvement with the archaeologists who had inspected the site at the outset. For those of you who weren't aware, it should be noted the town's old court was situated here and that below it there had been an ancient burial site. Local History is clearly a passion with Colin and he stated an admirable case for something being done in order to ensure the town's great heritage is given more prominence and doesn't simply fade away. George Penny thanked Colin and lead the Club members in showing their appreciation to him for coming along. 04.03.2010 Out and About
23.02.2010 Calling All Members
Bob Thomson, District Membership Convenor a member of Leven Rotary Club visited to provide members with an update as to the current campaign being run by Rotary to raise awareness of Rotary and to encourage new members into the organisation. An avid and enthusiastic Rotarian, Bob was both entertaining and informative.
09.02.10 In the News!!
The Club were delighted to have recently retired local reporter, Caroline Murphy (formerly Boxer) in attendance to speak about her experience of working in Journalism for the last 10 years with The Strathearn Herald - a job she was quick to point out she will miss. However, she now has new employment based at the Community Campus and will continue to be heavily involved in community work. Obviously, journalism and the media has gone through massive change in recent years and Caroline was able to explain, in great detail, both the threats and opportunities which such changes had brought about. Perhaps the most important point of note from the evening was the wealth of historical value which a local newspaper can bring to a community. It was fascinating to examine some old editions of the paper and to see the noteworthy stories of the day. All editions dating back to the late 1800s can be examined locally. Jeff Davies gave a warm vote of thanks to Caroline and wished her success in her new post. 2.02.2010 Little Ol' Wine Drinkers Us!
With President Willie unavailable for the evening Senior Vice President, Peter Dahl took charge of proceedings and a visit from Cairn O'Mohr Fruit Winery who gave a very interesting presentation and an even more interesting wine tasting. A large selection of all of their wines was produced and members thoroughly enjoyed the experience of tasting and comparing all that was on offer. 26.01.10 - A Celebration of Robert Burns
The Haggis Entertainmment "Haggis" - President Willie addresses the Haggis with Piper, Andrew Tainsh looking on. "Entertainment" - Provided by Emily Harrison (singer) & Alan Livingstone(speaker)
12.01.10 A Happy New Year!
Those members who managed to attend the Club's first meeting of 2010 were treated to a most uplifting and entertaining presentation from local lady, Hazel Murray. Unfortunately, Hazel has grown up having to content with the disability of deafness. However, you would be hard pushed to find a more positive, happy and outgoing individual if you tried. She certainly hasn't let her deafness get in the way of anything and her achievements are commendable. Hazel's aim is to work more with children and we have no doubt she will succeed in her goal. Jeff Davies gave a hearty vote of thanks on behalf of the Club Members. GROCERY GRAB WINNERS Co-operative - Mrs Jean Boyd Somerfield - Elaine Paterson
Harrison Fine Wines - Mrs Grace Donaldson
Christmas Meal 15.12.09 For its last meeting of 2009 the members decided to meet at Yann's in the Perth Road - who opened up especially to accomodate the Club. The event was very well attended by members and their guests and Yann's provided a very nice atmosphere with excellent service and Festive Fayre for all. Entertainment (of a Celtic Flavour) was provided by Mark and Michelle Stewart. During the course of the evening the draw was made for the Christmas Grocery Grab and the lucky winners will be informed during the course of this week.
08.12.09 What a load of rubbish! A complete waste of time! Those could possibly have been some members thoughts prior to the presentation given at the meeting by Donna Paterson & Mel Lorimer of Perth & Kinross Council. However, they gave an excellent presentation which was even more impressive as they were standing in for a colleague at short notice. It was good to know that the Council are clearly applying themselves seriously to what is a huge problem and that they are confident targets will be met. Here in Crieff we will receive a new Re-cycling plant and it is hoped that will be completed during 2010. Dr. Jim Penny gave a hearty vote of thanks to the ladies for their excellent and informative presentation. 01.12.09 Willie McLaren of Blackford Historical Society told the apparently little known story of the origins of the helicopter and the fact that its invention was very nearly attributable to a local Blackford engineer (Kay) who designed and built the first Autogyro (which was the forerunner to the helicopter) . Unfortunately, he lost out on his patent while serving in the Army and the Americans were then the first to patent the technology and go on to produce the helicopter. A clip of the machine can be seen at the following link: http://www.britishpathe.com/record.php?id=17693
24.11.09 An evening out and about - for a change - saw the Club invited to sample all that the new Community Campus has to offer. Headteacher, Christine Ross joined the meeting as a guest and then kindly provided Club Members with a guided tour of the new and very impressive facilities on offer both to local children and the wider community as a whole. The photo shows Christine Ross discussing the new home of Crieff's Public Library.
Club Members were delighted when Pesident Willie inducted David McLeod as the latest Member of Crieff Club - a very warm welcome is extended by all to David. The Club was also visited by Assistant District Governor, Samantha Miller who was pleased to present a Presidential Citation to Immediate Past President, David Smart to mark the Club having achieved all of its goals in the past year - one of only two Clubs in the District to do so.
10.11.09 Fiona Lowson from Comrie Primary School attended the meeting and gave a very informative presentation on her time in Malawi assisting with education there. It was amazing to see how the children there, with so little equipment, were so respecting of teachers and willing to learn. By the volume of questions asked it was clear to see members felt their contribution towards Fiona's costs had been money well spent. David Smart proposed the vote of thanks. 03.11.09
Last year's President, David Smart introduced the "President's Tankard" as a light hearted Quiz Competition for Club Members. Last year's victorious team captain, Rod Mickel provided this year's questions. After a hard fought contest this year's winners were George Penny, David Anderson , Ross Black and David Smart. Quizmaster, Rod is shown with David Anderson and Ross Black - who answered the vast majority of the questions!
27.10.09
Crieff Club took on an ecological theme at its meeting with its guest speaker being local resident, Norman O'Neill of RTS Ltd who has recently expanded the services it can offer with the ability to prepare or supply Woodfuel. In very simple terms, the use of wood is seen as environmentally friendly as at least part of the CO2 produced in the harvesting of wood can be put back into the growing of the product unlike other fossil fuels. The Government are keen to encourage the use of woodfuel and RTS Ltd are of the view it is certainly something which small to medium businesses should be giving serious consderation. Frank Strang proposed the Vote of Thanks to Norman for a most interesting presentation.
20.10.09
More Gavel success! Crieff Club made it two wins out of two with a hard fought victory over visiting Club, Blairgowrie. The visitors were welcomed to the Club's Business Meeting before battle commenced and a good evening's fellowship was had by all. It's Perth on Thursday for the next instalment - Captain Peter hopes his team's form is set to continue.
06.10.09
Our speaker at last night's meeting was Kate Robinson representing the Electoral Reform Society who explained that the Society have been campaigning for many years to have the voting system in the country changed to proportional representation and to leave behind the first past the post system in order to have a fairer representation amongst elected MPs. No sign of our President in this week's photograph. However, he hasn't been 'voted' out of office!
29.09.09 President Willie with current District Govenor, Bill Macfarlane Smith and his wife, Daphne who came along to the Club. Bill gave members a clear and interesting presentation on both his and the Rotary President's goals for the forthcoming year ahead.
22.09.09
The Club welcomed one of its members, Ian (or should we call him 'Robin') Wilcock as speaker. Ian gave an extremely interesting presentation on his pastime of "Toxopholy" or Archery as it is most commonly known. Apart from a visual presentation the members were able to see the equipment at first hand. It was clear to everyone thereafter that it is a very technical sport and certainly not as easy as people might think!
GOLF (2009)Putting Competition
The season was finished off with the Putting Competiton followed by handing out of the year's silverware. On a glorious Sunday afternoon it was a real family affair and a hard fought contest was only decided by sudden death after a 3 hole play off couldn't separate President Willie and Ross Black. In the end Ross triumphed by one shot! This year's Winners
Ross Black / Jeff Davies / David Smart 08/09/09 RYLA 2009 The Club was delighted to welcome along to its meeting two pupils of Crieff High School (Alasdair Bendall and Rachael Bruce) who had been selected to attend this year's RYLA Camp during the Summer Holidays. From their presentation it was clear both pupils had enjoyed their respective weeks at the Camp and would certainly recommend the experience to their fellow pupils should Crieff Club participate again in 2010.
25.8.09
David Washington The Rotary Club had the pleasure of the company of David Washington, one of our honorary members. David told us about his recent trip in his mobile home to Greece and Italy with particular emphasis on his visit to Matera in the Puglia region of southern Italy. The remarkable thing about Matera is the sassi, the dwellings created in the cliff face originally in the paleolithic era which have now made Matera a world heritage site. The cave dwellings are now fashionable and desirable having been cleared of inhabitants who were suffering slum conditions in the 1950’s. The photograph shows President Willie Bell with David Washington and Alastair Campbell who proposed the vote of thanks.
11.08.09 Fiona Smith - "Braco Quarry Inquiry"
06.08.09
2009 Winners The Greenkeepers The worthy winners receiving the Johnnie Taylor Memorial Trophy from David Taylor of WB Dodds Limited, and their bottles of 'The Famous Grouse' Whisky. 28.7.09
Shirley Miller the Macmillan Nurses Area Fundraiser for the East of Scotland, told us how our recent donation for the Perth Appeal has been spent on the new Cornhill Macmillan Centre at PRI. 14.07.09 The first speaker of the year, Rev. Phillip Patterson was a fantastic start to the new programme. Hailing from Carrickfergus and with a typical Irish sense of humour Phillip gave a most entertaining and thought provoking presentation (through stories, pictures, music and video) of his experiences of life as an Army Chaplain serving in Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan. He is now minister at Methven & Almondbank.
07.07.09 OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH THE NEW
President for 2008/9, David Smart reported on his year in office and what he felt the Club had accomplished during the past year before handing over office to President for 2009/10, Willie Bell. Above is a picture taken at the close of the meeting showing President Willie in his regalia and Immediate Past President, David with his Past President's badge. It should be noted that Willie is takiing office for the second time, having previously served in office some 17 years ago.
